ELIZABETH

“Both of them were righteous in the sight of God , observing all the Lord’s commands and decreed blamelessly“ - Luke 1:6

In the New Testament, God uses Elizabeth—a woman who had long been barren—to reveal His faithfulness and the beauty of steadfast trust.

During that time, barrenness was often viewed as a sign of punishment or sin, leading many women to face shame and mistreatment from family, friends, and their community. Yet, Elizabeth’s husband, Zechariah, cherished her deeply. They found joy in serving the Lord together, and in God’s eyes, both were righteous and blameless, faithfully observing all His commandments. (Luke 1:1–7)

Zechariah served as a priest, burning incense while the people prayed. One day, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayers have been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.” Because Zechariah doubted the message, he was rendered unable to speak until the child’s birth. (Luke 1:8–21)

Just as God promised, Elizabeth became pregnant and rejoiced privately in the miracle. Meanwhile, Gabriel traveled to Nazareth in Galilee to speak with Mary, Elizabeth’s cousin, delivering God’s plan to use her as the vessel through whom Jesus would be brought into the world to save His people. (Luke 1:26–38)

Although Mary felt honored by God’s calling, she stayed with Elizabeth for three months. During that time, Elizabeth mentored her—sharing wisdom about motherhood, God’s plans, and His faithfulness. (Luke 1:39–45)

After Mary returned home, Elizabeth gave birth to a son. Though relatives urged her to name the child after his father, Elizabeth insisted that his name would be John. When they turned to Zechariah for confirmation, he wrote, “His name shall be John,” and immediately his speech was restored. (Luke 1:57–62)

In conclusion, Elizabeth stands as a pillar of faith—continuing to worship, serve, and trust God with the deepest desires of her heart. God not only honored her faithfulness by blessing her with a child, but He also used her as a mentor to Mary of Nazareth, encouraging her to walk in the same trust. Elizabeth’s journey through infertility became the very testimony God used to reveal His glory.
