In the book of Joshua (Old Testament), shortly after Moses passed away, God chose Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land. Joshua was humble and obedient, and God encouraged him with the promise, “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” God then instructed Joshua to send two spies to scout the nearest kingdom. (Joshua 1:1–9)

Their first destination was Jericho, a heavily fortified city surrounded by massive walls. Inside, the spies witnessed poverty, idolatry, and violence—clear signs of a society far from God. Before long, Jericho’s guards detected them and began pursuing them through the streets.

Desperate and unsure where to hide, the spies ran into the home of a prostitute named Rahab. Despite her reputation, Rahab welcomed them and agreed to hide them—under one condition. She confessed that worshiping false gods had left her empty and exhausted, and she had heard stories of the God of Israel—His miracles, His power, and His love for His people. Rahab longed for change.

In exchange for her protection and silence, she asked that she and her family be spared when Israel conquered the city.

The spies agreed, but with one requirement: Rahab had to hang a scarlet cord from her window so they could identify her home during the attack. If she revealed their mission, the agreement would be void. Rahab accepted, and the spies escaped after hiding in the hills for three days. (Joshua 2:1–21)

When they returned, the spies declared, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands,” just as God had promised. (Joshua 2:24)

God then commanded Joshua and the Israelites to march around Jericho once a day for six days in silence. On the seventh day, after circling the city seven times, the priests blew the trumpets and Joshua commanded the people to shout. At that moment, the mighty walls collapsed by the power of God. (Joshua 6:1–20)

Joshua then ordered the two spies, “Go into the house of the prostitute and bring out the woman and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” Rahab and her entire family were rescued. (Joshua 6:22–24)

Rahab later married an Israelite named Salmon, and they had a son named Boaz—a name that becomes deeply important in the story of Ruth. Rahab lived the rest of her days among God’s people, redeemed and restored.

Prostitution and sex trafficking have devastated countless innocent lives. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, in 2020 alone there were 3,559 contacts, including 987 reported cases, 478 high-level indicators, 1,109 moderate indicators, and 1,488 calls directly from victims and survivors. These numbers highlight the severity of this crisis.

However, through increased education, awareness of available resources, and proper understanding of reporting procedures under Texas state law, these rates can decrease. Empowering communities with knowledge is one of the strongest tools in preventing exploitation and supporting victims on their path to safety and healing.Guide:
